Venture to Fort Lauderdale...Las Olas Art Festival 10/23-24

23rd Annual Las Olas Art Fair (Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.)

October 23rd & 24th, 2010

Saturday & Sunday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Free Admission

Las Olas Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.

An annual fall tradition returns to Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Ranked as one of the top 100 art festivals in the nation by a leading art publication, Las Olas continues to be one of the most anticipated art events in the area. People come out yearly to see over 150 artists display their work in what looks like a mini art gallery lined along the street. Las Olas Blvd, a popular tourist and resident attraction, boasts fine boutiques, great restaurants and a great city atmosphere.

Like all Howard Alan events, the 23rd Annual Las Olas Fall Art Fair is a juried show, which means each participating artist is hand-selected from hundreds of applicants to ensure a first-class festival with only the highest quality, original artwork. All exhibiting artists are required to be at the festival the entire weekend. This gives you the unique opportunity to meet the creators of the art on display; commission a specific piece; ask questions about techniques; learn the sources of their inspirations; and purchase fine works of art at affordable prices. All of the work on display is available for purchase, and with prices ranging from $15 earrings to $50 prints to $20,000 sculptures, there is always something for everyone.

Visit the poster booth across from the Cheesecake Factory to purchase the official Las Olas Poster!

Directions:
Take I-95 to Broward Boulevard and go east on Broward.  Make a right on Andrews Avenue, and then a left on East Las Olas Boulevard.  Registration is at SE 6th Ave. and East Las Olas Boulevard.

heart happening: lotus house

Heart Happening, benefiting the Lotus House Women’s ShelterFriday, October 22, 2010, at the Margulies Art Warehouse

For the sixth year in a row, the Martin Z. Margulies Foundation and Sundari Foundation have co-sponsored an extraordinary art event – this year called Heart Happening- at the Margulies Art Warehouse in Miami, with all proceeds benefiting the Lotus House serving women and children in need. The 2009 Hope Blossoms - Art Happening hosted last year included over 40 artists, musicians, dancers, and performance artists from New York to LA, as well as an amazing art auction of over 100 works, and was a resounding success attended by more than 800 participants, receiving both critical acclaim and unprecedented media attention focused on the special needs of homeless women and children and the unique ways in which Lotus House addresses those needs.

This year, with virtually every form of artistic medium represented, the 2010 Heart Happening will be an art “happening” like no other, including lively performance art, a live auction by Sotheby’s and silent auction, and chef’s tastings from Miami’s finest, filling the entire 45,000 ft warehouse and spilling out onto the street – both literally and figuratively – where so many of our homeless are forced to survive if we do not provide the support, tools and resources needed to build a better way of life. We are asking the artists invited to participate in this event to create spontaneous, “live works of art” that explore our heart based themes and engage the audience on every level. How do we see with our hearts? What do we hear with our hearts? How do we speak and act from our hearts? These are the questions we are asking the artists, dancers, musicians, performers and - audience – to answer and explore.  These are the questions all of us must ask in times that compel us to find new answers to the question of how we can truly make a difference for so many in need. Join us in pioneering an art happening that is heart based, celebrating our shared humanity, our “oneness,” and the power of coming together through heart to bring an end to homelessness.

thinking about my country today...

http://livesayhaiti.blogspot.com/2010/10/video.html
The Longest Two Minutes: Haiti quake kills hundreds of thousands from Phil Carpenter on Vimeo.

It's been nine months, since the earthquake struck Haiti.
Nine months, and only 2% of the rubble has been cleared.
Nine months, and people are still living in worse conditions then they were before.
Living in tent cities, no mattresses, just dirty muddy sheets, unsanitary, can't even take a proper pee or poo, drink clean water.

As a woman, not knowing how and when you can feed your children. Worrying as you close your eyes, whether some disgusting sick man will rip your clothes and rape you, or your daughters.

Help from all over the world came in an instant. And after all the countries did what they could in terms of rescuing, they left..all promising large donations, forever to help Haiti. Where are they now?

Even locally, we can't get our act together. Politics plays into every damn decision.

When did we forget we are human?? When did we lose the urgency and compassion to help and aid people without wondering what the benefits to ourselves would be?

Blah, I can go on and on an on and express my views and opinions, but the reality is, while I sit in a clean, air-conditioned place with access to a clean bathroom, and food in the fridge..It's still an immensely sad and horrible condition in Haiti..and change (the word we love and loathe) needs to start happening NOW.
