happy thanksgiving!!

save the turkeys!!!
whatever you do decide to eat today, i hope you are surrounded by loved ones, and grateful for all in your life!!

i am in paris visiting some family. extremely grateful they live here and always have a place for me to stay. instead of the "american thanksgiving", my day will consist of my own version of what thanksgiving should be: savoring crepe sucre, croque monsieur, macaroons, chocolate, pain au chocolat, the typical french baguette and some weird smelly but tasty cheese, champagne, beaujolais nouveau!!, haribo smurfs (the best gummy smurfs on earth, and only sold in france or germany, and the main reason i came here...i see my family on facebook!!!)  and giving thanks to my fellow frenchies for the weight i will ever so gladly gain, but then burn right off as i walk and climb millions of steps!!!!

i hope you have a lovely, warm, miami thanksgiving!!! lots of food, lots of naps!
happy thanksgiving

fall is in the air..

beautiful sunny weekends. no humidity. and a breeze.
this is my absolute favorite time of year.
just wanted to share my weekend plans with you in case you are looking for something laid back,  cheap, and original miami outings.

saturday am: knaus berry farm is back open!! arrive early for their AMAZINGGGGG fresh baked, warm, gooey, cinnamony, cinnamon rolls. and if you can still manage to fill your stomach, you must have a milkshake!
for those living in the heart of miami, wake up early, and take a drive down to homestead. i promise you that it is well worth it. they open at 8am.

and since you'll somewhat be in the area, stop by the redland farmers market along US 1 and SW 244th Street, pick up some fresh veggies/fruits for the thanksgiving holiday!! you can bargain with them too :-)

sunday am: pinecrest farmer's market
one of my favorite things to do is ride my bike over to the pinecrest farmers market, in the pinecrest gardens (old parrot jungle) parking lot. the trees are my favorite, favorite, favorite part. lots of different stalls selling fruits/veggies, honey, soap, random jewelry, etc. i just enjoy the strolling..sometimes there is a french baker who makes the most amazing sourdough and ciabatta bread, and rugalla.......i hope he's there.

pinecrest gardens11000 Red Road, Pinecrest, Florida 33156

i also like continuing the bike ride to matheson hammock park, and hanging out by the picnic benches by the bay/beach..so so pretty. we sure are lucky to live in paradise...especially when it's gorgeous outside!!!

naemi: national art exhibitions by the mentally ill

i have a soft spot for the mentally ill and art therapy. you and i may never truly know what it's like to battle a mental disease and the suffering that comes along with it, but i do believe that art heals and helps us grow and emerge. i've never heard of naemi before, but this looks like an interesting art exhibit. it will feature the art of the mentally ill....the exhibit opens this friday in little havana, and if you can't catch it this weekend, you should definately go next friday, november 26 during viernes culturales (little havana's art walk night)

International Outsider Art Show

The National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) marks its 23 years of service to outsider art with and exhibition and fundraising event on November 19, 2010 at Obrapia Fine Arts Gallery in Little Havana.

“With our Annual Exhibitions, we hope to bring additional attention to the struggle of those who have been diagnosed with mental illness,” said NAEMI’s Founder Juan Martin. “Our ultimate goal is to help these artists to be recognized and to fight the stigma that so often accompanies mental illness.”
Featuring the works of artists from USA, Spain, Chile and Paraguay. All 30 works featured in the exhibition will be available for sale with proceeds benefiting the artists and NAEMI’s goal of helping artists with mental illness from around the world.
In the past 22 years, NAEMI has been a pioneer of this field of outsider art by developing various projects, conferences, workshops and activities with experts in the visual arts, literary and mental health professions. NAEMI exhibitions have been annually shown in Miami and have circulated in various museums and art galleries throughout the United States and the world.

About NAEMI:
Founded in 1988, NAEMI emerges while Juan Martin, the Executive Director, worked providing counseling to mentally disabled persons at a community mental health center in Miami. After encouraging a patient to paint as a way to escape his intense suffering, Martin remembers how he liked that art work and realized at that moment that there were probably many other talented persons in psychiatric hospitals waiting to be discovered.

NAEMI have in his permanent collection near 1200 art works. Their final goal is to open a museum dedicated exclusively to the art of the mentally ill.

The schedule hasn't been posted yet, but stay tuned here: http://www.miamimusicfestival.org/index.php

The Miami Music Festival and its emerging artists' conference return this November with a new and expanded schedule, new venues and more new music than ever. The MMF will again feature acts in a wide variety of genres from Florida, around the U.S. and around the world, performing for the music industry, the press, the local community of music fans and visitors to Miami. In 2010, the festival will add shows in major theaters, two daytime, multi-stage sessions and use of more clubs throughout the city. Working with "Live Miami," a new initiative promoting the city's live music venues, and as the centerpiece of "Live Music Month in Miami," The Miami Music Festival is taking its next steps in support of live musical performance and emerging artists.
The Festival's conference will again give emerging artists the opportunity to refine their craft, interact with industry experts, and network with other artists from around the world. And exhibitors will again have the opportunity to present their products and services to artists on the rise.
