Jahfe plays a heavy fusion of roots reggae with rocking dub-hop. Representing the power of youth and the wisdom of roots culture, their performance reflect the true ability of conscious music to connect people of all backgrounds. Favorites of Miami’s music scene, Jahfe members represent diverse international cultural roots – from Haiti to Spain, Israel, Cuba, Czech Republic, Morocco, and the USA. The musicians and band have worked with a who’s who in reggae, most recently a hit song with popular star Sean Paul.

Symphony After Hours: Season Kick-Off with Friends of NWS

Friends of NWS kick off another exciting season with an electrifying poolside soiree at The James Royal Palm Hotel. The event features a live performance by the local band Elastic Bond, with their unique style of urban tropical funk sung in both English and Spanish. 

The event takes place immediately following the New World Symphony concert at the New World Center.* Light bites provided by Florida Cookery, with cocktails courtesy of Bacardi, U.S.A.

Third Annual Dwntwn Art Days Bike Tour

Love bikes? Love art? Then join us on the third-annual Dwntwn Art Days Bike Tour. The ride will feature artist talks and performances along the route and a delicious post-ride picnic catered by Pollo Tropical. Everything is FREE. All you have to do is RSVP at beachedmiami.com/artdays to secure one of the limited spots.

The starting point is CIFO’s bamboo-lined courtyard and a few easy-riding miles later we’ll stop at Museum Park for a Pollo Tropical feast. In between, we will:

- take a tour of CIFO’s private collection
- ride past a Primary Projects-curated series of street murals and enjoy a short talk by participating artist Autumn Casey
- inhale a “sensory scent experience” created by artist Nick Lobo
- visit artist Domingo Castillo’s public intervention at 777 International Mall
- witness harness-bound dancers boogie-ing up and down the walls at MDC
- stop at Downtown Art House for a noise show and Tasha’s Magic City Bazaar flea market


The tour starts at 4 pm sharp! Please arrive at least 15 minutes early so we can check you in.

Opening Celebration at PAMM



The celebration features the Miami debut of Brazilian band Alma Tropicalia. The DC-based band reimagines the psych-samba sounds of 60’s tropicália music from Brazil, a mind-bending mix of tropical rhythms, soulful funk grooves and day-glo psychedelia that has quickly earned the group ecstatic reviews and packed performances across the region. The band’s daring lineup combines the masterful Brazilian jazz vocalist Elin (featured on Thievery Corporation’s Brazil-inspired album “Saudade”) with the unhinged experimentation of some of the top backing musicians in today’s rock and world music scene (featuring members of Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey, Bio Ritmo, and more).

The Knight News Challenge on Libraries is now open for applications, asking people to submit ideas that address the question: How can we leverage libraries to build more knowledgeable communities? The challenge is offering a share of $2.5 million for innovative ideas. It aims to attract a broad range of ideas, not just from the library community but also from schools, businesses, journalists, designers, artists and others who believe in the transformational power of libraries.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Sweet, fragrant, and delicious are all words used to describe the jackfruit, a tropical fruit tree that is about to get its time in the spotlight at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. What’s most intriguing is its size – one fruit can weigh more than 60 pounds. Join Fairchild in celebrating and sampling this fascinating fruit at the Jackfruit Jubilee, held Saturday, September 13 from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Whether guests are familiar with the jackfruit or have never tried it, the festival will offer opportunities to learn how to grow it, cook it, and taste it. Chefs will perform live cooking demos, and Fairchild experts will present lectures and gardening demosto show how to care for the trees. Several varieties of jackfruit are available for sampling so visitors can experience the different textures and tastes. Curator’s Choice jackfruit trees have been selected by Noris Ledesma and Richard Campbell, Fairchild’s curators of tropical fruit, who have grown a new generation of hybrid jackfruit well suited for South Florida’s climate. All trees are available for purchase. For children, the interactive L.E.A.F.: Let’s Explore at Fairchild program invites families to learn about edible gardening through crafts, games, and planting activities.

The jackfruit, scientifically known as Artocarpus heterophyllus, is a member of the mulberry family. It is native to South and Southeast Asia, where several jackfruit fairs are held throughout the year. David Fairchild, the garden’s namesake, collected it from Sri Lanka to plant in Florida. It is regarded as an important food source, and a single fruit can feed many people. Its spiky, golden skin covers hundreds of seeds surrounded by the edible, sweet flesh. The flavor is often described as reminiscent of banana, pineapple, and Juicy Fruit gum. A good source of Vitamin C, potassium, calcium, and antioxidants, it can be incorporated into many meals. Thirty varieties of jackfruit from India, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Australia are grown at the Fairchild Farm in Homestead by Noris Ledesma and Richard Campbell.

Admission is free for Fairchild members and children 5 and under, $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and up and $12 for children 6-17. Eco discounts are available for anyone who walks, bikes or takes public transportation to the festival.

This spin-off of our Wednesday yoga classes incorporates themes of ecology and the natural world into the poses and breath work of a hatha-based yoga class in a beautiful outdoor setting. Get a workout and a botany lesson at the same time. Did you know that Buddha became enlightened sitting under a ficus tree? Meditate under our Ficus benjamina and discover your own purpose for being. This class is accessible to all skill levels, and is taught by Terra-Nova (RYT). All donations given at this class support the Garden. Suggested donation $5 for Garden members, $10 non-members.

YoungArts Awareness Day is a nationwide, one-day initiative to “keep arts alive,” by celebrating the hundreds of thousands of young artists across the country and encouraging them to pursue a career in the arts. This day also highlights our efforts to contribute to the cultural vitality of the nation by identifying and supporting the next generation of talented young artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts.

YoungArts Awareness Day coincides with National Arts in Education Week, which takes place September 7-13, when the National Education Association celebrates, promotes and showcases the immense role arts education has in producing engaged, successful, college and career ready students.

Help #KeepArtsAlive on social media
Join us in spreading the word to “keep arts alive” on September 8. We are encouraging everyone who has a creative instinct to take part in this very important initiative by creating and sharing their own work, or artistic experiences at museums and concerts, via social media with the tags #keepartsalive, #youngarts and#youngartsawarenessday. For inspiration, a playlist highlighting the work of select YoungArts alumni will launch that day on Spotify.
