33rd Annual King Mango Strut Parade
2pm, Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove

The 33rd annual King Mango Strut marches down the streets of Coconut Grove where South Florida’s wackiest citizens come out to entertain the masses with the biggest newsmakers of the year. Our country has had a rough year, but things look good in the future, so the parade is themed around the slogan “Life is just ebola cherries.” 

Among the hilarious acts, expect to see “FanGate” – remembering the debate that blew us all away; “Invasion of the White House: Intruder Alert!;” “Taken by Tolls on the 836 and 112;” and “Charles Manson’s Wedding.

The King Mango Strut goes beyond watching — it’s engaging fun for the entire family. The event starts with the Little Miss Mango and Little King Mango pageant, where every kid wins, and rides the float to lead the parade. Following the Grand Marshal and Little Mangoes, the laughter will ensue as groups engage crowds along the route in an interactive review of the most entertaining happenings of 2014. Following the parade, Commodore Plaza will explode with four live bands for an after-party until 6:00 p.m., and plenty of photo opportunities with the Mangoheads.

This year’s Grand Marshall is Rick Scott, Governor of Florida, on his “In Your Face Victory Tour.” We will also have Guest Celebrity Ed Bell, of WLRN, in honor of his 44 years of broadcasting and promoting music in South Florida, as well as his promoting the King Mango Strut.

The parade begins with the dropping of the banana at 2:00 p.m., at Commodore Plaza and Main Highway, runs to Grand Avenue, makes a hard left, and heads back to Commodore. Early arrival is suggested to get the best viewing spots. Children who want to participate in the Little Miss Mango and Little King Mango pageant and ride the float should arrive at Commodore Plaza by 1 p.m. (no special outfits needed). The parade ends with an after party on Commodore Plaza, with local bands Iko-Iko, Roadkill, Mr. Nice Guy, and Memphis Kelly rocking until 6:00 p.m

The ride will be going through Little Havana, West Flagler, Coral Gables, Miracle Mile, Coral Way, Shenandoah, The Roads, Brickell, and Downtown. Total distance is approximately 15 miles. It's strongly suggested that you print a copy of the map or save it on your phone in case you are tardy or get lost.

All eyes appear to be on Miami Critical Mass and it’s time for participants to prove the opposition wrong. Everyone riding is solely responsible for their actions and should lead by example. If you see someone riding or behaving irresponsibly, then let them know it’s not acceptable. If you’re partaking in the ride, then it’s your duty to positively influence others. Ride safely and be courteous to everyone in the community, if you can’t do this then quite simply you are not welcomed. There’s no room for hostile, drunk, moronic individuals. There are a lot of great people on these rides, enjoying their city by bicycle for 1-2 hours on the last Friday of every month, and it’s rather unfortunate that a few bad apples can ruin this special occurrence for everyone else. To frustrated motorists, borrow a bicycle and try joining the ride sometime with some friends. You never know, you just may experience one of the most fun, free, and healthy social gatherings South Florida has to offer.

Bicycle Rules & Safety Tips
  • Stay in the right lane, and do not ride across middle line on the road into opposite travel lane
  • Yield to emergency vehicles.
  • No Headphones! While riding a bicycle it is illegal to wear a headset, headphone or other listening device, other than a hearing aid or instrument for the improvement of defective human hearing.
  • Safety Lights: Front & rear lights are required by law in the State of Florida. 
  • Kids under 16 years of age must wear helmets.
  • Do not ride on the sidewalk.
  • Passing: A passing cyclist is responsible for the safety of the cyclist that is being passed. When passing ring a bell and/or say "on your left".
  • Yield to pedestrians and buses.
  • No drinking of alcohol or illegal activity during ride.
  • Do not filter forward past stopped cars at a red light.
  • Skateboarders, inline skaters and recumbent bikes are welcomed, exercise caution.
  • Do not litter or vandalize any property.
  • Stopping: If you must stop to check your bike, phone, gear etc please move over to the sidewalk when it's clear. Do not stop abruptly in the middle of the street with the mass behind you. You will more than likely cause a cyclist to hit you and/or swerve and hit someone else.
  • Always perform an "ABC Quick" Bike Check to ensure that your bike is in safe working order.

Adventures in Miami :: Exploring the Everglades, Tamiami Edition

The Tamiami Trail (TAMpa to mIAMI) was completed in 1928. The first east to west route ever built across the Everglades of South Florida. Fast forward to today, and most of us take I-75 Alligator Alley when heading west. Tamiami Trail, a National Scenic Byway by USDOT, is still around and leads you to some beautiful parts of the northern section of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve.
Peaceful Bike Ride Views
Shark Valley, Everglades National Park
Heading West on Tamiami Trail, some 40 miles from "Miami Proper", you will find the entrance to Shark Valley Visitor Center. (NO sharks here..,) The $10 entrance gives you access to Everglades National Park for one week, but while you're here, the thing to do is bring or rent a bike ($7.50/hr), and bike their 15 mile trail through the park. Along the trail, you will find walking paths that lead to different ecological environments, you will see alligators (do not feed or pet), tropical birds, an occasional snake (no boas...), hammocks, and mid-way through the trail, you will find yourself at the Observation Tower. The Observation Tower has a beautiful view of the Everglades. Not a building in sight (minus the actual tower), for miles. The ride is easy, but can be intense if you're not used to a 15 mile trek..Be sure to bring water and snacks along for your ride, and for the non-bikers, there is an informative tram ride for $23.

Miccosukee Indian Village
Continue traveling west on Tamiami Trail, and in one mile, you'll arrive at Miccosukee Indian Village. If you grew up in Miami, you were probably put on a school bus and sent on a field trip to the Miccosukee Indian Village. You watched alligator wrestling shows, held a baby alligator, learned about the Miccosukee tribe, bought random crafts, took an airboat ride, and maybe...you tried alligator! Well...this place is still the same! A little touristy, a little ketchy, but uniquely Miami, and a glimpse of what our lives may have been like without all those Miami developers!!

If you're around December 26, 2014 - January 1, 2015, Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Annual Miccosukee Indian Arts & Crafts Festival and Fashion Show at the Miccosukee Indian Village. Doors will open daily at 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM -rain or shine.


Big Cypress National Preserve
(technically not at all in Miami-Dade County...but if you're this far out west, might as well visit!)

Nap Time
When I was younger, we would visit Marco Island pretty often and drive through Big Cypress National Preserve. Always curious from the car window, I never stepped foot in this park until my college years. My science course, Ecology of South Florida, had us visit this park...and take hikes through wet, muddy sloughs. Terrified, but brave, we walked a mile and learned something about gumbo limbo trees...and holy shit, there are alligators all around us. Yeah..didn't listen or learn a thing after I heard that. Fast forward almost 10 years...and this place is still beautiful (no longer interested in wet hikes). The preserve allows the more outdoorsy people the opportunity to hike, hunt, kayak and canoe, and if you're lucky...you can participate in their Night Sky & Astronomy Programs (usually held in winter months).

The best time of year to visit the Everglades is late fall, winter, and maybe spring.
Remember it is hotter/colder inland, so plan ahead!

The December 19 edition features GABEL in concert in the plaza. Gabel is one of the most popular next-generation pop konpa bands in Haitian music today. Opening set by Hector Lominy and band. Between sets, DJ Mack Bazile.

Little Strong: Jose El Rey Retrospective

Jose El Rey was a fictional recording artist active from roughly 2006 to 2009. Created and performed by Jose Flores in a series of live shows, albums, and web videos, Jose El Rey was a parody of Latin American machismo who became legendary for his drug-and-croquetta fueled concerts at the now-defunct PS14 and Vagabond spaces as well as befuddling Miami at large with impromptu performances on Calle Ocho and unsuspecting Cuban restaurants. He was also among the most notable early articulations of a uniquely Miami "spicster" culture: first generation Americans exploring their relation to their heritage through an ironically comic lens. While El Rey was murdered in 2009, his legacy lives on through his influence on the next generation of Miami creators. Buskerfest is an annual Street Music Festival celebrating the diversity of Miami’s local artists through the long revered practice of street performance. The festival seeks to put musicians, actors, comedians, writers, acrobats, jugglers and dancers face-to-face with people who live and work in greater Miami.
