5/17: Welcome Back Weekend!

Almost Memorial Day Weekend....Almost Memorial Day Weekend.......
Even though it is pretty much summer in Miami year round, Memorial Day Weekend starts off the real summer season in Miami. Long sunny days, random hellish rain storms, beach days, bike rides, boating, BBQ's, iced coffee...you get my drift. Almost time..Our last weekend in Miami before the true summer season (and probably the last weekend in town for most locals this month.....you know everyone runs away next weekend...right?)

Cheers to the weekend!! What will you do?
(Pic below is from the amazing Official Miami Book)

FRIDAY
If you have never been to this event in Little Haiti...(or to Little Haiti period), check out this monthly event hosted by Rhythm Foundation. It's a great night of Haitian Kompas, art, food, dancing and culture. All we hear/see are negative images of Haiti...when the reality is Haiti is a beautiful, beautiful country with amazing food, beautiful beaches, incredible art, and music that just gets you in an undescribable mood.
side note: white haitians exist. biased opinion :-)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
A free movie in the heart of the city.
Bring chairs/blankets/snacks (and your drinks in a flask)

Mon 5/13: Love and a Movie

Mondays...suck.
Check out O Cinema & Love and Vegetables as they present
LOVE AND A MOVIE!

Perfect way to unwind on a crazy Monday evening, and perfect dinner for Miami Vegans or those who celebrate Meatless Mondays!

The Movie:

GIMME THE LOOT

Malcolm and Sofia, two determined teens from the Bronx, are the ultimate graffiti-writers. When a rival gang buffs their latest masterpiece, they must hatch a plan to get revenge by tagging an iconic NYC landmark, but they need to raise $500 to pull off their spectacular scheme.

Over the course of two whirlwind, sun-soaked summer days, Malcolm and Sofia travel on an epic urban adventure involving black market spray cans, illicit bodegas, stolen sneakers, a high wire heist, and a beautiful, rich girl’s necklace that is literally their key to becoming the biggest writers in the City.

The Menu:

Graffiti Salad
Create your own art on the tray with a medley of black beans, lentils, squash, greens, millet,
and house sprouts, and with a splash of three different seasonal dressings: Spicy Mango Lime, White Bean Cucumber, and Green Goddess

The Loot: Portobello Mushroom Tacos with Salsa Verde
Assemble your own taquitos from a selection of marinated mushroom strips, Earth ‘N Us Farm greens, salsa verde, and spicy mango chutney.

Bronx Summer Quinoa Pilaf
Enjoy a mixture of South Florida Summer Vegetables cooked together with Quinoa and a
mixture of spices and flavors found along 187th Street.

6 Train Sweet Potato Fries
Our Salt and Vinegar Sweet Potato Fries are just like riding the 6 train into the Pelham Bay Park
Station: a little sweet, a little salty, and a whisper of sour.

Dessert: Big Apple Crumb Cake
We hit a homerun with this Big Apple Cake, created with local cane sugar, our special Bronx Spice Mixture, and finished with Graffiti Writing Crumb Topping.

Mid Movie Snack: Chocolate Sun Pillows
Chocolate and Sunflower Butter may come from two different neighborhoods, but that doesn’t
stop their friendship. We stuff Sunflower Butter inside little chocolate pillows to create a love that
has no boundaries.

About Love and Vegetables:

Love and Vegetables is a Community pop-up Cafe that operates on a pay-what-you-can basis throughout South Florida. Love and Vegetables’ mission is to feed all in our community with dignity and respect, regardless of means to pay; if guests cannot afford their meal, they are welcome to volunteer their time in exchange. In addition to its healthy, creative, vegan fare, the cafe also offers educational workshops and opportunities to learn about growing, minding, harvesting, and preparing vegetables and vegan dishes.

Sat 5/11: Design District Gallery Walk

It happens every Second Saturday of every month.
Gallery Night in the Miami Design District

Gallery Night in the Design District was the first art walk I can remember in the area way back when places like Piccadilly Garden (PopLife Thursday Nights, awesome!), Grass, SoHo Lounge, Brosia/Mai Tardi (can't believe what they did with this space) and such were around. The good old days..

Nowadays, everyone and everyone else seem to go to Wynwood Art Walk and I'm all for local spots getting recognition and business and all, but WAW is just way too crowded for me. I actually like to go and look at art. Get inspired, lost, touched by art, maybe with a drink in hand. I hate to be bombarded by hipsters photo bombing and instagramming every second of their lives, or have other people's sweat drip on me.

With the revamp of the Design District (Bonjour! Cartier, LV, Hermes, Dior and other high end shops) comes a classier gallery walk.

Have some cocktails at Oak Tavern

and a bite to eat at Mandolin Aegean Bistro

Check out the galleries!

PRECIPICE/POSTMODEM
Locust Projects is pleased to present Precipice/PostModem by Miami-based artist Jillian Mayer. Mayer is known for eclectic video installations that compress virtual, cinematic, and physical space. This will be Mayer’s largest exhibition to date, passing fluidly from cinema to installation in both the physical and digital realm while incorporating interactive and technological elements to create a nonlinear meta-narrative. In the Project Room - Tracey Goodman & Valerie Snobeck: Out of Place Curated by Joanna Kleinberg Romanow, Assistant Curator, Drawing Center, New York.
3852 North Miami Avenue

CHIMEN LIBETE
The Month of May is Haitian Heritage Month, a nationally celebrated time where the Haitian culture is celebrated throughout the United States and in Haiti. During this very special moth the Haitian Heritage Museum is pleased to present Chimen Libete (The Road to Freedom) - A collaboration between the Haitian Heritage Museum and the Museum of the Haitian National Pantheon (MUPANAH) in Haiti, to feature an exhibition of the historical account of freedom from slavery in Haiti. 4141 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 105C

TERRA NON DESCOPERTA
Last opportunity to see Alfredo Jaar’s Terra Non Descoperta. Three light boxes with color transparencies sit on the floor. They show a beautiful sea in three parts. A text by Christopher Columbus is overlaid on the images, describing his obsession with finding gold. The spectator is seduced by these images to approach the work. The light boxes, placed some 20 inches from the wall where fifteen gold-framed mirrors hang horizontally facing them; suddenly, a reflection appears on the mirrors. They show us images that are inset on the other side of the light boxes, the side facing the wall. They are gold miners from Serra Pelada, in the Brazilian Amazon. But the mirrors also reflect us. We find ourselves together with the miners in the space of the mirror. 23 NE 41 Street

PRESQUE VU BY MAITEJOSUNE URRECHAGA
Yes, No or I Don't Know Why, are common responses to questions. When the answer is "On the Tip of the Tongue", some call it "Presque Vu" or almost seen. To experience the work of Maitejosune Urrechaga is similar in character to these psycholinguistic phenomenon. For her solo show, Maitejosune explores through portraiture the universal experience of unconscious thoughts and impulses as yet unexplained by science or spirituality. 150 NE 42 Street

Sat 5/4: Food Blogger Bake Sale

Saturday, May 4, 2013
Food Blogger Bake Sale

Tropical Park (7900 SW 40th St)
alongside the SouthWest Community Farmer's market.

Thanks to FatGirl Hedonist for sharing the following:

This is the fourth year the Food Blogger bakesale is going on in Miami and the second year I'll be participating in it. Last year our bakesale ended up ranking third in the nation, let me say that one more time fo some emphasis, THIRD IN THE NATION. 100% of all the proceeds from the bakesale go to Share Our Strength. Share Our Strength is a national non-profit organization that is working towards bringing an end to childhood hunger here in Uhmerrica.

If you're a food blogger (yea I'm lookin at you Burger BeastGourmandJChat Chow TV, and South Florida Burger Overload) feel free to join the team, there's lots of ways to help. You can either bake with us for the day of the actual bakesale, help with online fundraising or just help spread the word through your social media outlets. Last year we were able to make it to the top 3 bakesales in the country, getting beaten out by NYC by only a couple of dollars. Best part is, Domino Sugar matched our fundraising efforts, making our total donation $7,304. I know that with more hands on deck, this little bakesale can be the best in the country.

Along with the bakesale, there is a whole online fundraiser going on. You can make a donation as small as $1, because any little bit will help. This year, nearly one in five kids in Uhmerrica will face hunger. That's more than 16 million right here in our own country. Next time you're in line at Starbucks, think about donating the money you're about to spend on hungry children. Btw, a $1 donation will help feed one child with 10 meals... like I said any little bit helps! Did my guilt trip work? If so, feel free to donate a couple of dollars here.

2012 Miami Food Blogger Bakesale

In an effort to try and raise the most money possible, we've put together a pretty awesome raffle. The raffle winners will be announced at the actual bakesale on May 4. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each, 3 for $10. If you can't make it out to the actual bakesale on 5/4, any local person that has made an online donation will be eligible for a raffle entry! So what the heck is being givin away in this raffle anyway? Well a butt-load of gift certificates to some of my favorite local restaurants and other really neat stuff:

 • Cooking class for two at Williams-Sonoma South Beach
• $100 gift certificate to Chef Adrianne's Vineyard Restaurant & Wine Bar.
• Lunch for two (valued at up to $100) at EDGE Steak & Bar.
• Wokstar Eleanor Hoh is donating a Gift certificate for two people to attend one of Wokstar Eleanor  Hoh's cooking classes.
• $50 gift certificate to 660 Restaurant at the Angler's Resort.
• $50 gift certificate to Blue Collar Restaurant.
• $25 gift certificates to CRAVE Restaurant.
• $50 gift certificate to Lee & Marie's Cakery.
• $25 gift certificates to Sweetness Bakeshop & Café.
• $50 gift certificate to OTC.
• $25 gift certificate to Spice Galore.
• $50 gift certificate to Have Gastro-Lounge.

Now onto the actual bakesale! Last year we had everything from bundt cakes to doggie snacks up for sale. Although I can't vouch for the other baking bloggers, I will be making my Toffee, Pecan & Bacon Blondies. Yea you read that right. So where the hell is it going to happen? Tropical Park (7900 SW 40th St) alongside the SouthWest Community Farmer's market. Like I mentioned before, it is happening May 4, 2013 and it starts at 10:00am. Bring your kids, your dog and your abuela. Feel free to check out the Facebook event invite!
Fatgirl Hedonist's Toffee, Pecan & Bacon Blondies

Some of the goodies for sale at the 2012 bakesale!

Come out, donate, buy some sweets, join the raffle and help a good cause!

Miami Trolley expands to Midtown/Design District

o-MIAMI-TROLLEY-MIDTOWN-DESIGN-DISTRICT-ROUTE-570-1.jpg

The City of Miami has expanded their free trolley service to the Midtown and Design District areas. It's a little weird that there are no stops from Margaret Pace Park until you get to Midtown, so if this is supposed to service all those shiny new towers, and the towers to come....you missed a few stops City of Miami..

It's also a bit odd that they don't extend service South to Coconut Grove (Grove Grapevine is upset about this too..see his post) Maybe they will add service once the whole Scotty's/Charthouse tax situation/RFP situation is figured out, but there are some great restaurants, bars and parks that are missed by not having some stops in the Grove..
