Art Basel 2009

As you can see, I'm uploading all sorts of goodies going on this week for Art Basel.
Sorry they aren't in chronological order by date, but time just seems to keep flying by and that wasn't on my list of important things to do!

Hope you and yours are able to make it out to some of these events. I think Art Basel and the surrounding events are really great for Miami, our tourism industry and getting people OUT and ABOUT, despite what local artists are saying (protesting).

It's Miami, is anyone EVER happy here?!

Breakfast in the Park

The seventh annual Breakfast in the Park, The Frost's signature event during Art Basel Miami Beach, will feature an informal lecture by Michele Oka Doner, whose work is included inThe Missing Peace: Artists Consider the
Dalai Lama
.

Born in Miami Beach, Michele Oka Doner is an internationally acclaimed artist and designer who has built a career that includes public art projects, monumental sculpture, furniture and jewelry.

Celebrating organic forms and fueled by an appreciation of the natural world, particularly ocean life, she has also integrated the human figure as a subject in her works using bronze, wax, silver, clay, concrete, handmade paper and glass.

Her artwork has been acquired by major museums and private collectors including
The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Mussée des Arts Decoratifs at the Louvre. Oka Doner’s large scale installations can be seen locally at Miami International Airport and atThe Wolfsonian-FIU Museum.

From Daily Candy:

F Factory Pop-Up Shop Opens

fendi stitch kit!

There’s nothing wrong with dropping the occasional F bomb.

Especially in the case of F Factory, the multibrand pop-up shop opening today in the Design District.

Inside the Moore Building, high-end fashion houses have set up artsy micro boutiques, selling designs throughout the holidays.

Stop by Fendi for a needlepoint stitch kit, a canvas handbag that comes with colorful string (so you can customize your purse). Accessories designer Katherine Fleming displays her classic clutch reconceived by sixteen artists and sells her spring line. And Neon Monster, the hipster toy company, hawks limited-edition prints in the Cave of Wonders, complete with stalagmites and glowing tree stumps.

Also on hand: ultra-luxe — and pseudo-secret — Parisian clothing line Maison Martin Margiela and Christopher Ross’s gold-plated, hand-cast belt buckles.

Sure, the high-end lines may cost a pretty penny.

But f@#k it.

SCOPE ART SHOW T-SHIRT WALL

We have extended our deadline for t-shirts to be submitted for our T-Shirt Wall at the Scope Art Show.

Come drop off one t-shirt that you designed at our second Pop-Up Party, Friday November 27th, from 7pm to Midnight.

We still have some blank shirts and art supplies, so just come with an idea if you don't have the means to design your own, and make it at the Pop-Up Party II while sipping on a complimentary Grolsch beer or illy espresso.

Download the pdf for more details.

If you don't live in Miami or are under 18, the deadline to send us a shirt by mail has also been extended to November 27th.

Miami Music Festival

As mentioned previously here, Miami Music Festival is right around the corner.
I'm not quite sure how much promotion has been going on, but hopefully they intend to promote this event a lot more during the next two weeks.

The event is scheduled to take place right after Art Basel, December 10-12, 2009 all over Downtown Miami and Brickell.

The lineup promises 600 events, 25 stages, and ONE wristband required to attend all events.
Price tag: For all three days, $50 ($35 for students); For one day, $25 ($20 student).
If you aren't mathematically inclined, find your old student id, and buy the three day pass for $35.

The schedule is posted here, and is pretty much your typical, complex venue listing.

The majority of the acts seem to be local South Florida bands (which is awesome!) and if you're looking to know more, check out their website http://www.miamimusicfestival.org/index.php

Take Me to the River

BY P. SCOTT CUNNINGHAM

Take Me to the River

It’s baffling to us that, in a city drowning in natural water features, we rarely end up at events that take place on the water. This weekend will be different, though, thanks to the second annual Downtown Miami Riverwalk Festival. Held at the confluence of Biscayne Bay and the Miami River, the festival aims to put Miamians where they belong. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, the family-friendly event will feature a boat parade led by the Coast Guard, ethnic cuisine, face painting, clowns, strolling musicians, and your general allotment of festival-style pageantry. Admission is free and all are welcome, even pets. Call 305-416-6868 and enjoy the view.

Diaspora Vibe Gallery is pleased to present Hastings grad’s Fulbright Scholar Aimee Lee as she extends her paper trail to her debut Miami solo exhibition of reflections on paper and recent work. Her medium is pulp; the vehicle is water dipping, beating sifting. She has recently completed a year of Hanji history, practice and contemporary research in Korea where as a Fulbright Scholar she learned this ancient art of papermaking. Her book making, installation performance artwork uses paper that distinctly takes on a life of its own.

Native Intelligence presents new artworks that reside primarily in tradition and generational memory made tactile and texture-filled from the outcome of this ancient Hanji practice. Curated by Rosie Gordon -Wallace, Native Intelligence examines Aimee Lee’s journey with paper.

Jason Shawn Alexander. Insomnious

Whether positive or negative, artist Jason Shawn Alexander hopes his abstract figurative works evoke some response. “The one thing I always want in all my work is some form of emotive connection,” the artist says from his studio in Los Angeles. In his first solo show at 101/Exhibit in Miami, titled Insomnious, Alexander presents mostly images stemming from right before sleep or right after waking up, as seen in Insomnia in which two female figures are superimposed on each other. “There’s more of that image making in this show, and from the title of that painting came the show title. It seemed to fit because I don’t sleep well at all,” says Alexander. “It’s the perfect title for a large collection of images that are disjointed and come from a restless mind.”

For Art Basel Week:
Claudio Ethos
, Brazilian wunderkind of the evolved urban street art movement, will install an astonishing, multi-dimensional illustration on the exterior wall of 101/exhibit between Dec. 2 and Dec. 6. Inside the gallery, an Ethos exhibition featuring new works will run through January 20, 2010. & Painter David Michael Bowers gets (Sur) Bowersdelves into a world that has been described as “surrealistic,” “contemporary fantastic” and “illusionary,” as he blends modern themes and whimsical ideas with the techniques of the great masters.

Joerg Doering, Nostalgic Pop
Adamar Fine Arts will host German Pop artist Joerg Doering for a solo exhibition of his large-scale iconographic images of Pop culture of yesteryear and today. Born in Germany in 1965, Doering is a child of the Pop Art Movement. "Pop art was my first aware meeting with art, and I was suddenly thrilled. Maybe because I was born in this time and grew up with this languag.”
Doering first worked with Comic art icons such as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse, yet always combined the cartoons with his own characters. Later he turned more to movie icons of era's past such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Steve McQueen.
The work makes a commentary on historical place and iconic status of the characters he paints. The result is a new fresh look at a bye-gone era's movers and shakers through ever challenging and discerning eyes. In Marilyn Sensational, Doering asks us to question just how sensational her life really was. With a large representation in Europe, Doering brings his newest work to Miami during Art Basel as a clever, fresh look at what defines pop culture then and now.

Ai Kijima, a New York based Japanese artist shows a large fabric collages depicting vivid Technicolor landscapes peppered with pop symbolism. Miami based Elizabeth Condon shows a sprawling and impactful abstract painting. Miami based artist and activist John DeFaro shows illustrative ink works whose luminosity echoes that of Van Gogh and Duffy. Luis Garcia-Nerey a Miami based sculptor will show structures made from reclaimed wood whose primitiveness evokes the uncertainty of wild animals. Cuban/American plain air painter Lilian Garcia-Roig whose typically large semi abstract works often feature dense local forest exhibits a visually striking work with a strong linear rhythm. Miami Enrique Gomez De Molina draws on his family's intimacy with the business of taxidermy to produce faultless exquisite corpse-like animals that seem to have been plucked directly from a Hieronymus Bosch painting. L.A based Juanita Meneses an artist whose work deals with the intersection of the immigration system and personal memories, exhibits a configuration of diminutive watercolors that center on solitude in the wildness. And finally Michelle Weinberg, a Miami based artist and writer will depart from her signature graphic murals with the production of a floral carpet.

Sleepless Night this Saturday... 11/7/2009

Last year was the first year Sleepless Night took over Miami Beach.
It was a fun time to explore Miami Beach (from South Beach to Normandy Isles),
all events were free, organized, and free transportation was provided back and forth!

I'm happy that the City of Miami Beach is continuing this night as it's a great time to come out with your friends, family (kids can come too) and lovers, and see what our city has to offer.

As of now, here is the schedule

From 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2009, until 7:00 a.m. the next morning, Miami Beach will stay up all night with more than 150 free arts and entertainment events presented at 80 different locations throughout the city. Over 100,000 people of all ages will enjoy free museum admissions, indoor and outdoor art installations and performances, architectural tours, dance (and dancing,) theater, music, slam poetry, film, video, fashion, acrobatics, comedy and more, including several unique collaborations and South Florida and world premieres.

The City of Miami Beach collaborates with every cultural institution in the city, and with numerous other organizations, businesses and individuals to ensure that Audi Sleepless Night includes all aspects and points of view of what we collectively call “the arts.” Free shuttle buses with onboard arts programming connect the four zones of activity and remote parking for the full 13-hour night.

1.SLEEPLESS NIGHT is FREE. Audiences of every socioeconomic level are able to share the experience more than 130 free events covering the entire spectrum of arts and entertainment.

2. SLEEPLESS NIGHT is HUGE. Our inaugural event drew over 100,000 people, two-and-a-half times the number of attendees at Art Basel or Wine & Food, and we are expecting more than double that at SLEEPLESS NIGHT this year.

3. SLEEPLESS NIGHT is CITYWIDE. Our goal of bringing ALL the arts to ALL the people means intensive programming in all of the diverse neighborhoods of Miami Beach. Free shuttle buses (with onboard movies and performance artists) run from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.

4. SLEEPLESS NIGHT is COLLABORATIVE. The City of Miami Beach partners with EVERY cultural institution in the City (each with its own extensive membership outreach and networking program), as well as with private businesses and individuals, to ensure maximum participation and exposure.

5.SLEEPLESS NIGHT appeals to the ENTIRE FAMILY. There are performances and exhibitions for every possible audience, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens.
