Got Volunteerism for the Arts? August 6th

gotvolunteerism-arts.JPG

Join Connect Florida on Friday, August 6th at 10:00 p.m at Louis (Gansevoort Hotel 2325 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach) as they host a night of networking with Arts for Learning, Flagler Street Society, Friends of the Gusman and Zoetic Stage. Enjoy an open bar cocktail reception courtesy of Louis at the Gansevoort and silent auction while learning about our local South Florida Arts Charities.

A study conducted by the National Association of State Arts Agencies showed that in 2006, Florida's financial support of arts was ranked second in the country. This year it has fallen to 49th place in per capita spending for the arts, thanks to a 92 percent cut in State spending -- from over $30 million to less than $1 million -- 14 cents per person for the year. A chart that shows Florida’s funding for the arts can be seen here: http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100517/GRAPHICS02/100519777/2055/NEWS&template=graphics

School Supplies Needed for Homeless Kids

When I was little, I used to get really excited to go back to school. Big dork, yes. My favorite part of getting ready to go back to school, was back to school shopping. I got to pick out new clothes for the school year, and list in hand, my mom would take me to Office Depot (Target was not around back then) to pick out new folders, pens, crayons, rulers, etc.

I saw this article on CBS4 and I thought I would share it since I'm sure most of us were fortunate to get new school supplies every year. I've helped out at CPH before and it's a really great organization helping adults and their families get back on their feet. A lot of these families at CPH are at CPH for many reasons (lost their job, domestic family issues, etc.) and these families are working hard and getting back on their feet and putting their lives back together.

If you are able to help out in any way (school supplies, school uniforms or monetary donations) it would be a great thing that would put a smile on the kids faces...

Group Collects School Supplies For Homeless Kids

MIAMI (CBS4) ― In just a few weeks, thousands of kids across South Florida will be out shopping with their parents for school supplies for the upcoming year.

Some families, however, are going through difficult times and won't be able to afford any supplies this year. But thanks to the Community Partnership for Homeless, their kids will get the supplies they need and you can help.

"It's like sometimes you feel you are in the world by yourself," said Latasha Phillips.

Phillips, who lost her job, is homeless with her four children.

"You have to get rulers and special stuff for projects," said Phillips. "It's kind of hard when you don't have it."

Hoping to help people like Phillips, the Community Partnership for Homeless has set up two sites where people can make donations. They're hoping they can collect enough to help out two hundred kids.

"When you see the faces on the children, when they get their back packs and their uniforms and their school supplies they are so excited," said Patricia Vila with the Community Partnership for Homeless.

One of the children the donations will help is Phillip's five year old daughter Katara who will be starting fifth grade next year.

"We need pencils, stuff for projects, homework folders," said Katara

If you would like to help, you can stop by one of the Community Partnership for Homeless' two collection sites – one in Downtown Miami and the other in Homestead.

The agency needs the following items:

  • Backpacks
  • A variety of school supplies including pencils, crayons, rulers, notebooks and folders
  • School uniforms including shirts, polo shirts, pants, shorts, white shirts, khaki or navy blue pants, shorts or skirs.
  • Socks and shoes
All materials and donations can be dropped off at either location throughout the entire summer:

Chapman Center in Downtown Miami
1550 N. Miami Ave
Miami, FL 33136

South Dade Center in Homestead
28205 SW 125 Avenue
Homestead, FL 33033
