Happy Birthday Miami.com

Here's what we have going on this week:

On Wednesday, get a nap in because we're pulling double party duty. Stop into Blade at Fontainebleau for happy hour, which means 2-for-1 drinks, from 6:30-8 p.m. Grab dinner at Scarpetta (if you've got cashola to spend) before checking out the Spam All Stars at Mansion. The fun starts at 11 p.m. RSVP to editor@miami.com (please include your email address and # of guests) for free admission and drink specials.

Take Thursday off, because Friday marks the actual day Miami.com came into the world. Celebrate the blessed event with us at Liv at The Fontainebleau from 10 p.m.-midnight. We'll be serving complimentary Belvedere cocktails.

This party is a private event, so here's what you have to do to get on "the list": email editor@miami.com with your best b-day story ever (pony rides? You and 20 of your closest friends in a private villa in Mexico?), along with your name and email address. If your story is one of our favorites, you and one lucky guest will be cold maxin' and relaxin' at Liv with Miami.com.

Don't worry about buying us a present, your presence is a gift in itself. (Though we wouldn't refuse bottles of the Veuve. Just saying.)

Mamajuana!

From Thrillist:

Mamajuana
Opens Thurs, 225 Altara Ave, Coral Gables; 305.968.2384

No matter how elevated a culture gets, if it wants to remain vital it must remember its roots -- even if its roots are an alcohol that makes you forget everything. See what that's all about, at Mamajuna.

Housed in the former Chispa space (gutted and revamped with colonial earth tones, tile floors, Taíno Indian statues, and pan-Latin American art), Mama serves up Latin cuisine that's fairly nuevo, but's named for its antigua signature beverage: Taíno Indian/Dominican mountain hooch made with rum, wine, herbs, tree roots, and bark, and reputed to cure everything from the flu to flaccidity. As for the grub, vast app choices include boards of cheese (Manchego, Tetilla, Cabrales) or meat (chorizo Cantipalo, jamon Serrano, salchichon), plus more involved numbers like shrimp w/ coconut, plantain, and mamajuana apricot glaze, and mix of clams, mussels, calamari, bay scallops, shrimp, lobster, and crab called “Ceviche 7 Potencias” (also a culinary-themed Yul Brenner vehicle). Entrees range from Cornish hen w/ potato & lobster chorizo hash; to “Mamajuana Paella” (saffron rice, chorizo, calamari, shrimp, clams, mussels, 1/2 lobster); to “Puerquito”: slow-roasted pork w/ onion escabeche and pigeon pea rice (but wouldn't it poop it?).

Drinks cover the new school -- e.g., “Taíno” (Malibu, Southern Comfort, fresh limes, passion puree) and “Gengibre” (vodka, fresh lemon juice, fresh crushed pineapple, ginger puree) -- the old school (red & white sangria), and the very old school, in the form of actual mamajuana shots. If it works as it's supposed to, it should remember your root.

Ultra Music Festival-Miami

I'm still contemplating if I want to go...Don't really care for the whole house/techno scene, but I would love to see The Ting Tings, The Presets...or should I just save my money and see them at Coachella??! I wonder with our shiteous economy whether people will even go all out this year...

Langerado-CANCELLED!!! :-(

There was a lot of talk this morning of Langerado 2009 being cancelled, but before we started spreading rumors we wanted to hear it directly from the source. Unfortunately, we found out that the rumors were indeed true. There are many probable factors as to why the festival got the ax -- the economy, venue, music format -- but it's still very disappointing to see it go.

Here is the official press release from Madison House Publicity:
Today, the 2009 Langerado Music Festival is cancelled due to sluggish ticket sales. The 7th annual event was slated to happen March 6-8 at their new home in downtown Miami's Bicentennial Park.Langerado's independent local promoters, faced with a very tough decision in a dismal economy, cancelled the 2009 event only after every possible option was exhausted. As Langerado Co-Promoter Ethan Schwartz explains, "Langerado has always put the fan experience first. Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it's become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events. Putting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time."All tickets purchased will be refunded. Please look for ticket refunds to be processed in the next 5-7 business days. Each order will be refunded to the credit card in full, minus the included order processing fees. Shipping fees will also be credited for those orders that did not select the free shipping promotion. Visit www.musictoday.com for more information.

This week...

The 46th annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida will be held February 14, 15, 16, 2009.

The Festival attracts more than 150,000 people annually to view the works of over 330 of the finest artists and craftsmen in the world. A signature event of the South Florida cultural calendar, the Arts Festival offers visitors the opportunity to meet with exhibiting artists, sample fine cuisine, enjoy live entertainment and take a walk through history. And for the kids, they too can create their own works of art in our Coconut Grove Bank Kids Creative Corner. Last year approximately 4 million dollars of artwork was sold in three days at the show.

Cost: $7.00
