Alas, Miami Art Week is upon us. After years of trying to enjoy ALL of the events which seem to be happening at the SAME time, this year, we're taking it easy. To keep our sanity, we're visiting a few events, and then sending ourselves off for some peace and quiet at Eau Palm Beach. Rather than overwhelm you with every single event, party, happy hour, fashion show and fair, we selected our faves to visit, and some other happenings around Miami!!! Enjoy!

Adventures in Miami: Wynwood Food Tour

Apart from the occasional Panther cold brew, my experience with Wynwood has always been at night. An evening gallery party or Second Saturday Art Walk has taken me up and down the colorful streets, but after an invite from Miami Culinary Tours I decided it was time to explore Wynwood in the light of day.


Our host, Grace, greeted us at Wynwood Walls giving us a brief background on Miami’s history, the transformation of Wynwood and a lesson on the many artists now attracted to the flourishing area. Once consisting of abandoned warehouses and parking lots, Wynwood is now home to over 70 galleries and museums as well as countless restaurants and bars. After taking in the works of artists from around the world including Shepard Fairey, Gabriel Gimenez, and Fafi, we began the tour. 


The restaurants we visited had cuisines as diverse as the neighborhood art, ranging from American Bistro, Nuevo Latino, Puerto Rican and Peruvian. The tour ended with a local Florida classic, Key Lime Pie.

Rain or shine, the Wynwood Culinary Tour is presented daily at 12:00 pm. For $69, a knowledgeable guide will take you around the neighborhood teaching you about history, artist information and an introduction to five new restaurants. The tour lasts for 2.5 hours, covering a distance of about a mile. Tickets are easy to purchase on their website, and they also offer tours in South Beach and Little Havana. Join us at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden for two weeks of incredible music and beautiful art in a magnificent setting at Fairchild's GardenMusic Festival.

Throughout the Festival week, visitors to Fairchild will be treated to chamber music through open, outdoor rehearsals and surprise concerts during the day. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and engage the musicians, experiencing music on an intimate and personal level.

This year's GardenMusic lineup debuts with a mix of genres including classical, jazz, rock, and folk music. Featured artists include award-winning folk musicians Aoife O'Donovan (vocalist) and Jeremy Kittel (violinist and fiddler). Performances include Chick Corea's "Spain" and Dvorak's "Piano Quintet."

Sunday, January 11, 7:00 p.m. - The Sacred, Profane, and Spiritual
Listen as musicians explore the timeless themes of spirituality, piety, and irreverence from composers across the centuries, including works by Osvaldo Golijov, Bach, Liszt, and Berlioz.

See how new music has been inspired by works that preceded it. This concert explores the breadth of ways that music has been revitalized and expanded upon with folk tunes, modern interpretations of Baroque pieces, and new compositions by GardenMusic artists.

Sunday, January 18, 7:00 p.m - A Gozar! Grooves in the Garden feat. Tiempo Libre
This exciting final concert features the Grammy-nominated and Miami-based ensemble Tiempo Libre, known for high-energy timba music and introducing the music styles of their native Cuba to international audiences. They have performed on The Tonight Show, Dancing With the Stars, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and more. The concert also includes new jazz works by GardenMusic artists.

Children's Concerts
Saturday, January 10 and Saturday, January 17 at 10:30 a.m.
Families can enjoy a fun-filled hour of musical education and engagement for children of all ages. This presentation is free for Fairchild members and is included with regular garden admission for non-members.

Art Basel/Miami Art Week 2014



Rather than having a temporary "I'd Basel NOT" meltdown, the only way to possibly conquer any/all events for Art Basel/Miami Art Week/Art of Manuevering Miami Traffic is to break it down into a day by day OCD cruise like itinerary. I started to....and then I gave up. It's overwhelming and impossible to write/track every event!! 

We'll be photoblogging this week on the events we attend, so stay tuned to the blog and our instagram feed, and enjoy the week with all the NYers pretending they know Miami better than we do ;-)

43rd Annual South Miami Art Festival

Chamber SOUTH's annual South Miami Art Festival, one of the premium juried art shows in the country, returns on Saturday and Sunday, November 1st and 2nd, from 10:00am to 6:00pm, on historic Sunset Drive in the heart of South Miami (between US1 and Red Road).
This is a free, family friendly festival and is open to the general public.

The 43rd Annual Chamber SOUTH South Miami Art Festival, which is sponsored in part by presenting sponsor First National Bank of South Miami and receives support from the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Department and the City of South Miami, will include over 100 booths featuring artists from around the world, as well as live musical entertainment and international food vendors.

Parking is available around the art festival and at the South Miami Metrorail station.

Adler Guerrier: Formulating a Plot

Pérez Art Museum Miami presents the first solo museum exhibition for artist Adler Guerrier, surveying 15 years of work across diverse media. Guerrier and exhibition curator Diana Nawi will discuss a breadth of topics reflected in the exhibition, including the artist’s interest in Miami’s history, the legacy of the 1960s, and the influence of cinema and literature on his practice. more

AdBombing Launches at Bardot

AdBombing is a Miami based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting emerging street artists both locally and around the globe. We raise funds to purchase available advertising space and then donate that space to artists within the community to do with it as they see fit. We aim to give talented artists a city-wide stage to share their work, local communities easier access to the artists within their own city, and everyone a more beautiful environment in which to live and work.

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum located on the main campus of Florida International University, is proud to host its second Slow Art Day. As a Smithsonian Affiliate, we have world class exhibitions on view. This Slow Art Day is dedicated to the memory of Helen Venero, a dedicated docent, volunteer, and art lover who enthusiastically helped us launch our first Slow Art Day.

Participants will get a chance to “slow down” in our grand galleries with Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art exhibition. Each participant can pick up a visual analysis worksheet at the front desk, if they wish to use it as they are looking. Bring your lunch or purchase one at our nearby food court and then join others on our beautiful terrace overlooking a lake.

Global Master of Trash & Art- El Anatsui at the Bass Museum

El Anatsui will be in conversation with Bass Director and Chief Curator Silvia Karman Cubiña


Who is El Anatsui? He is one of Africa's best known contemporary artists, and is one of the world's most critically successful, celebrated for inventing an original sculptural medium where before there was only junk & garbage. Fresh off his major exhibition at NY's Brooklyn Museum, the Ghanian-born Nigerian resident's work Gravity & Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui is coming to the Bass beginning on Thursday April 10.

El Anatsui's tapestries, strung together with chicken wire, scrap metal and twist off liquor bottle caps, transform local remnants of scourges Europeans brought over with the slave trade into a rueful commentary about Africa's history. The bottle caps are from the African-made liquor that the artist and his assistants recover from dumps near his home.

Hope you can join opening night to hear El speak, and see his undulating, and shimmering tapestries-work that has joined a very short list of history-making masterpieces by artists who have used junk and garbage - think of Duchamp's bicycle wheel, and Robert Rauschenberg's bed- to make provocative and visionary statements.

During this enchanting evening of masked revelry, exhibits from local artists Miguel Paredes and Alex Mijares will transform the terrace of the Coral Gables Museum into an outdoor gallery filled with music and mystery. Enjoy complimentary Bacardi cocktails, LIQs premium mixed shots, Hatuey beer and bites from local favorites such as Eating House, Swine, Morton’s Steakhouse and more while DJ Blaze Carreras hits the turntables for a truly unforgettable evening.

Don your most sultry disguise or be one of the first 300 guests to arrive and receive a complimentary masquerade mask upon arrival. Sweep your date to the dance floor or mix and mingle with beautiful strangers while a special dance performance by Stephanie Mas and rhythmic accompaniment from Carlos Saballos and Javier Rosales delight the senses.

The night will be full of surprises, so guests are encouraged to capture their memories in a themed, commemorative photo booth to make the magic last long after midnight. Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 at the door and all proceeds benefit the Coral Gables Museum. 

This is the third year the Young Associates will host Party on the Plaza on behalf of the Coral Gables Museum. The event is expected to raise over $50,000, with more than 750 guests in attendance. Additional artwork from Ruben Millares, Kiki Valdes, Victor Alarcon, Gaudi Castro, Michael Halley, Cynthia Fleishmann and Natessa Amin throughout the Museum for the duration of the month.
