Global Master of Trash & Art- El Anatsui at the Bass Museum

El Anatsui will be in conversation with Bass Director and Chief Curator Silvia Karman Cubiña


Who is El Anatsui? He is one of Africa's best known contemporary artists, and is one of the world's most critically successful, celebrated for inventing an original sculptural medium where before there was only junk & garbage. Fresh off his major exhibition at NY's Brooklyn Museum, the Ghanian-born Nigerian resident's work Gravity & Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui is coming to the Bass beginning on Thursday April 10.

El Anatsui's tapestries, strung together with chicken wire, scrap metal and twist off liquor bottle caps, transform local remnants of scourges Europeans brought over with the slave trade into a rueful commentary about Africa's history. The bottle caps are from the African-made liquor that the artist and his assistants recover from dumps near his home.

Hope you can join opening night to hear El speak, and see his undulating, and shimmering tapestries-work that has joined a very short list of history-making masterpieces by artists who have used junk and garbage - think of Duchamp's bicycle wheel, and Robert Rauschenberg's bed- to make provocative and visionary statements.

Paul Ayick Quintet
Trumpet player Paul Ayick performs mainstream jazz compositions using the traditional jazz quintet format. The group will consist of trumpet, tenor saxophone, upright bass and drums, and will be performing both Mr. Ayick’s original compositions as well as selections from the American Song Book. Paul Ayick was born in New Jersey and spent a considerable amount of time on the New York jazz scene before moving to Broward County. This will be a rare oportunity to listen to one of South Florida’s hidden treasures.

The Bass Museum of Art resumes its Hot Nights Cool Jazz series, a celebrated locals destination for culture, conversation and music.  Beginning in June, the concert series will feature some of the best contemporary Jazz artists in South Florida.
Performers: Jason Hainsworth Quartet
Saxophonist Jason Hainsworth will perform with piano, upright bass and drums. Concert will feature both original compositions and jazz standards in a swinging, modernjazz style
