The June edition brings true legends of Haitian music to the Little Haiti Cultural Center plaza. Magnum Band is one of the longest running, most enthralling and diverse musical ensembles Haiti has ever produced. Founded in 1976 in Haiti and based in the US since the 1980s, Magnum Band has been developing the classic compas sound for 35 years, with blazing guitars, jazzy horn arrangements, sophisticated phrasing, and socially conscious lyrics - an explosion of diverse beats and rhythms anchored in Caribbean culture. The founders, brothers Dadou and Tico Pasquet, continue to lead the group, featuring top Haitian artists.
The night opens with a set by Ayabonmbe, an 8-member Haitian racine (roots) music and dance group. More than 20 traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythms form the beat for this vibrant ensemble, led by composer and founder Marc Joseph, and percussionist Patou Lindor. Ayabonmbe is the war cry of the Arawak Indians, defending their sacred Caribbean homelands, and it remains today a leitmotif in the struggle for education and peace.
Big Night in Little Haiti also features arts and crafts vendors, visual arts (the MAGNIFICENT Contemporary Haitian Textiles exhibit) in the Gallery, hands-on activities for children, open gallery space at the neighboring Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance and 7th Circuit Studios, food, drinks and fun. After 10PM, 7th Circuit Studios hosts the after concert show with the Moksha Family All Stars and special guests.
