Fusion MIA- Art Basel 2013 Events
Fusion MIA, Where ART Fuses with Fashion, Film, and Music has the mission of bringing greater awareness, attention, and business opportunities to the African and Caribbean Diaspora’s modern and contemporary emerging artists. This will be accomplished throughout four nights and four days of hipster, trendsetter events attended by influencer “A-list” guests, featuring international celebrity chefs, and covered by luxury lifestyle magazines, Jones and Uptown. The drink of choice throughout the events will be luxury vodka brand Grey Goose.
The Purvis Young Art Museum
The Purvis Young Art Museum, located at 255 NW 23rd Street in Wynwood, is slated to host one of the more memorable events associated with Art Basel 2013 as artists from Italy and Brazil take to several graffiti-free walls to wage a “Graffiti Competition.” Plus the Museum will feature the artwork of Frank Frazier, a master painter known for his pieces making liberal use of African cloth, as well for his more recent `shoe polish’ collection about desegregation. Lastly, the works of young contemporary artist Jamaal Stafford and Purvis Young Art Museum resident artist Emilio Martinez will be displayed along with pieces by Purvis Young.
N’NAMDI Contemporary
For Art Basel, N’NAMDI Contemporary is having a group exhibit featuring master and emerging artists Robert Colescott, Al Loving, Ed Clark, Nanette Carter, Frank Bowling, Hugo McCloud and Vicente Pimentel at N’Namdi’s gallery, located at 177 NW 23rd Street, in Miami’s Wynwood art district. Around the corner on NW Miami Avenue, N’NAMDI will also be hosting a pop-up gallery, where musician Kahil El-Zabar is to hold forth over an exuberant mix of art, music and video known as “Elevation.”
The Jakmel Art Gallery
The Jakmel Art Gallery is a Wynwood space run by artist and musician Jude Papaloko Thegenus, who hails from Port au Prince, Haiti, and is better known in art circles simply as Papaloko. He’ll have his double-threat artistic talent on the display for Art Basel, because not only will Jakmel feature Paploko’s distinctive surrealist creations, but on Dec. 4 at 9:00 p.m., he and his Vodou pop band, Loray Mistak, will be performing at Jakmel, located at 2703 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33127. Multitudes Gallery
Moving northeast into Little Haiti, the Multitudes Gallery has both culinary and artistic treats in store for Art Basel, starting with an exhibit titled Caribbean Fantastic freaturing work by Master Artist Jean Claude Legagneur and a private dinner for art collectors on Nov. 30. Three days later artwork from Haitian artists will be on display from Dec. 4 until Dec. 9, and will be complemented with panel discussions and a series of lectures. Global Caribbean V
Global Caribbean V is an exhibition component of the Haitian Arts Alliance that over the last five years has promoted and shown art created in the Caribbean. For Art Basel, Global Caribbean V will be focusing on Caribbean Diaspora artists who live in Miami, as well as produce their art here, in an exhibit scheduled for the Little Haiti Cultural Center, 260 NE 59th Terrace, Miami, 33137. The exhibit runs from Dec. 6 through Jan. 26, and some of the featured artists are: Glexis Novoa (Cuba); Noelle Theard (Haiti); Rodney Jackson (Jamaica); Fabian Pena (Cuba); and Misael Soto (Puerto Rico).
