Palo at Downtown and 2nd Saturdays Art Walk 1/9: Wynwood and Design District

Back to the grind. Back to work.

We're all somehow managing to drag ourselves out of our warm, warm beds..and somehow managing to put our work faces back on. Ehh..vacation was so much nicer, as usual!! It's actually Winter in Miami. Not 70 degrees either. It's really f-ing cold. I LOVE IT!!!

Well, even though it's Monday, I'm already looking forward to Friday and the rest of the weekend. Perfect weekend to bundle up, walk around, check out some (free) music and art, and keep warm with red wine.

Palo!

Bayfront Park

We are kicking off the New Year with some funk. Friday, January 8, 2010 at 5:30 pm the DWNTWN Miami Concert Series is presenting the Miami based band PALO! Their unique and infectious style, textured with exciting beats from the tropics and a touch of some serious jazz, will have the crowd dancing the night away at this free concert at Bayfront Park’s Tina Hills Pavilion.

The New York Post raves “Afro-Cuban Funk is Cuban music for the new generation. And the leader of the sound is the Miami based band PALO!”

It seems as if all the galleries in both the Wynwood and DD area are participating in January's art walk, so there should be lots to see :-)

Gabriela Morawetz.
Closer To Me Than Myself
In these works Polish artist Mprawetz explores the issues of duality that accompany individuals. The viewer is placed in the position of the alter ego in relation to the characters represented in the work.

Julie L. Friel. Gravy in her own words
“These feral figures that inhabit my cityscapes are of you! However, there are a few self-portraits in there. This thick mix of gravy is influenced by everything from the primitive art in the Pacific Northwest, to the popular culture, and then on to street art and graffiti.”

Also, Cintas award winner, Cuban, Gladys Triana and “Todos los cuerpos extraños”, a curatorial project by Pasajero Cultural from Spain.

Daniel Bottero, Reaching To Love, mixed media on canvas, 2006, 86 x 82 in.

Daniel Bottero. The Love Of The Poet
“Our past, our present and our future all influence my paintings. Each painting I create is an essential part of my inner being. My work speaks many languages, communicates on several levels at the same time. A unique psychological interaction between reality and fantasy, one that transports the observer into a dreamlike encounter with the sublime.” Daniel Bottero

"Bottero is ... a poet painter, that is, a painter who uses the medium to convey the poetry of his emotions ..." Donald Kuspit

Today Bottero works in his studios in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami and in Buenos Aires. Bottero graduated from the National School of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires. He earned his Master’s Degree at the Academia Italiana di Belle Arti, Lucca, Italy. From 1986 to 1990 Bottero resided and worked in Paris. Since 1990 he has lived and worked in New York. Bottero’s work has been shown throughout the world. His paintings are featured in the corporate collections of Citibank, Xerox, Avon, Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan Chase Bank.

Andrea Chehebar. Purusha (Project Room)
About THAW: Using color, non-conventional media and materials, and strategic placement, Andres Ferrandisaccomplishes pieces that capture the spectator’s curiosity for truth and thought. Andres’ work depicts an evident influence from constructivist and architectural trends. The appeal lies in the fact that there is no abstraction in the creative process of his pieces. Born in Spain and a resident of Miami since 2002,Ferrandis’ concept of footprints left behind is portrayed in his work through his tactical minimal brushstroke and linear panels; just as time has passed by in our dimension, his brush has passed leaving reminiscent color behind.

Purusha (Project Room)
About
Andrea Chehebar: As a Miami Resident, this Colombian artist will be presenting Photography, Video Installation, and mixed media pieces

“We are all different on the outside; no one human being is or thinks exactly the same as another. So, what is it that unites us all? What is that imperishable, unchanging essence we all seem to share?

Purusha, pure consciousness, is the divine self that abides in all beings and guides us. What is due to us will eventually reach us naturally and with no need to worry.

Arnaldo Anaya – Lucca. Adam and Eve.

One of today’s leading fashion photographers, Arnaldo Anaya-Lucca, will be presenting his first fine art solo exhibition, “Adam and Eve,” at Luis Perez Galeria in Wynwood, Miami during this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach, hosted by Manuel Norena. Anaya-Lucca is a renowned fashion photographer known for capturing the world of Ralph Lauren rethinks classic imagery as his own personal expression of events in history.

For his first exhibition of its type, Anaya-Lucca rethinks classic imagery in a more personal way, animating events in history with a curiosity that is both critical and sensual. Adam and Eve is a nude study inspired by 17th and 18th Century renaissance paintings. The images reflect the struggle of sensuality, temptation and shame that underlies the human condition as well as the joy of sexual innocence. The artist also wanted to address situations where the line between internal and external sense of self was/is in conflict throughout human history. The set design for the exhibition is also by Manuel Norena with Jed Root in New York.

Jordan Doner. Claudio Ethos. David Michael Bowers.

Doner Photography. Recent Works. Doner will unveil large-scale photographs and mixed-media imagery. Prints from the December 1st interactive installation will also be on display.
His centerpiece will be a large-scale photographic diptych of exploding artist-edition luxury handbags "Louis Vuitton, Murakami Cerises," and "Louis Vuitton, Richard Prince Jokes."

Accompanying the diptych, and treading the line between photography and sculpture, will be "Edition of 1,” 15 unique photographic sculptures featuring luxury goods explosions, idealized and uninhibited nudes, and landscapes abstracted from the ethereal spaces of the earlier performance installation. Each “Edition of 1” framed 16” x 20” photograph will be fused with materials from the now-deconstructed antechamber environment -- nylon from the bodysuits, silk-screens of explosions and nudes over nylon or Plexiglas, and bits of debris from the detonated luxury goods.

Claudio Ethos, creates a multi-dimensional illustration on the exterior wall of 101/exhibit
Raised in the poverty-stricken neighborhoods of his native Sao Paolo, Brazil, Ethos became deeply influenced by the calligraphic atmosphere and graffiti art on the streets around him. He decided he, too, would become a “graffiteiro,” or urban painter.

David Michael Bowers. New Works
From a blank surface painstakingly prepared with rabbit skin glue, chalk and white zinc, acclaimed painter David Michael Bowers delves into a world that has been described as “surrealistic,” “contemporary fantastic” and “illusionary,” as he blends modern themes and whimsical ideas with the techniques of the great masters.

Bowers began his career as an illustrator and has created more than 100 magazine covers.

All three shows will be on view until January 10, 2010

Carlos Betancourt. Solo Exhibition.
Lapidus Infinitus

In Betancourt’s most recent photographic artwork, the artist continues to assemble explosive compositions consisting of thousands of photographs of objects, people, flowers and other elements that occupy the superb glitzy realm of beauty for which he is known. The images appear in their full kitsch splendor, possessed by an enchanting light and seemingly crystallized by a magical sorcerer

In addition, there is a sprawling three-dimensional installation of multiple column pedestals, each supporting an accumulation of auspicious objects to be worshipped. A symmetrical assembly creates spaces for interaction within this fantastical world. As with the photographic compositions, this large-scale installation, Portrait of a Garden, iconizes these pop objects the artist has gifted with a unique sense of dignity.

Curated by Eva Grinstein
Fabián Burgs, Martín Di Paola, Marcolina Dipierro, Verónica Di oToro, Lucio Dorr, Silvia Gurfein, Silvana Lacarra, Adriana Minoliti, Karina Peisajovich, Pablo Siquier and Andrés Sobrino.
Latin American Abstract Geometric painting, with its strong ties to Europe yet with its undeniably great, regional protagonists, has left an enormous legacy to the contemporary art scene of the continent.

In this opportunity, Alejandra von Hartz Gallery has invited the curator, Eva Grinstein, to present a carefully selected group of artists, who inherited and continued this rich tradition in Argentine art. They “reinterpret and---in a way--- render homage to the masters of the vanguard, who changed the direction of Latin American art in the mid 20th century.”

Grinstein notes: “This selection presents the work of eleven accomplished Argentine artists of the new generation, who through the use of very diverse materials and techniques---painting, reliefs, light pieces, and drawings---reignites and updates the passion for structure that characterized the artists that challenged the paradigms of representation.”

El Contrato.
El Contrato (The Contract) is a series of photographs depicting a woman's journey of self discovery and identity. Although inspired by the artist's personal experience, many universal themes are presented that create a dialogue with the viewer. Gender, family, life cycles and memory are symbolically represented with elements charged with ritual and spirituality. The contract of loyalty with the fears and prejudices of the past is broken and the woman becomes free to discover herself in the many roles within contemporary society.
Dina Mitrani Gallery opened in November 2008 and specializes in international contemporary photography. The gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists, offers artists talks and lectures on photography as well as photo-based books. The gallery is committed to promoting its artists, as well as working with independent curators to produce unique group exhibitions.

Louise Nevelson, Ted Larsen, Howard Sherman, McKay Otto (USA), Agustín Cárdenas, Raúl Martínez, Hugo DeSoto, Carlos González, Carlos García, Raúl Milián, Loló Soldevilla, Antonio Vidal, Sandú Darie, Hugo Consuegra (Cuba), León Ferrari , Kazuya Sakai, Ernesto Berra, Alicia Penalba (Argentina), Hope Brooks (Jamaica), Wosene Kosrof (Ethiopia/USA) and TIGA (Haiti) among others.

Abstraction has been part of the art tradition since its worldwide acceptance in the first half of the XX Century and is very much alive today. Looking at a diversity of artworks from different perspectives it is easy to see why abstractionism has survived. With that thought in mind we organized this collective exhibition in which we show different approaches to abstract art.

The exhibit brings together pieces by artists from different countries, periods and trajectories. Some are very well known internationally while others are best recognized in their own countries. Some of these artists dab at abstraction as part of their creative journey, as is with Ferrari and Raul Martinez, while the rest can be seen as maintaining it as a sort of more permanent trend.

Ribadeneira's Ribadeneira's practice can be understood as an interrogation around the phenomena of the territories. Territories interpreted not only as physical entities but also in relation to the processes that contrast ideological, political and identity wise horizons. The poetry contained in her works have the virtue of relativizing the individual gaze towards the sensible themes that she depicts, making the perceptive experience complex by not using obstinate rhetoric that wants to teach a lesson or denounce.

Jose Bedia.
Ritual Of Passage
First solo show of new work for Cuban contemporary artist Jose Bedia to take place in Miami, in 2 years. The artist will exhibit over 15 new mixed media paintings in which he continues to explore connections between our spiritual origins, indigenous cultures and our contemporary selves. Omar Pascual-Castillo writes:

“We have the truth, the reality, of a man who finds in these cultures the hopes of life and the solution to the ethical-religious disaster of contemporary society, a man who finds in art a way to make them worthy as “new fetishes of adoration”, as if making a “conceptual ready-made” that uses art to recreate the force of his contents, of his inheritance, of his energy.”

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1959 Jose Bedia has come to the forefront of contemporary artistic production as is recognized as one if not the most important artist to have emerged from Cuba during the past 20 years. He has exhibited in countless internationally renowned museums, receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1994 and is part many of the most significant private and public collections across the globe including the MOMA in New York, The Whitney Museum, the Tate Gallery and the Hirschorn Museum in Washington D.C.

There will also be a retrospective of the work of Jose Bedia at the MIA Art Fair 2010 taking place 7th – 10th of January at the Miami Beach Convention Center

Jesus Soto
Penetrable BBL Blue, 1999

Enjoy this spectacular Soto at Durban Segnini new open space in Wynwood. Soto was a Venezuelan artist (1923 – 2005). He was a sculptor and painter and is most famous for his op art and kinetic art works. Soto is particularly well known for his penetrables, interactive sculptures which consist of square arrays of thin, dangling tubes through which observers can walk. It has been said of Soto's art that it is inseparable from the viewer; it can only stand completed in the illusion perceived by the mind as a result of observing the piece.

Durban-Segnini Gallery was founded in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1970 and in Miami, USA in 1992, by its present director and owner Mr. Cesar Segnini.

Durban-Segnini Gallery specializes in contemporary painting and sculpture, emphasizing in artists who have worked with abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction and kinetic art.Simultaneously, the Gallery strives to promote and diffuse new artistic values as well as the historical vanguards that have influenced those.

Kito Mbiango. 'L'Orange Elegans',
2008
Mixed Media on Canvas

Kito Mbiango. Solo Show
Mbiango draws from his wide-ranging travels and photographic experience in producing works that excite the imagination by crossing and blurring cultural borders between Eastern and Western spheres of influence. Elements of post-colonial commentary (initiated via found 18th and 19th Century engravings in the style of John James Audubon, J. Barralet, and James Fittler) and modern cultural references (through the use of turn-of-the-century photography and silkscreens) converge in a rich, complex layering of color and graphic embellishment.

Above all, however, emerging artist Mbiango’s more pressing concern is the unity of both artistic and human ingredients: the integration of Eastern and Western influences seeks to peacefully reconcile the inherent cultural differences so ubiquitous in postmodern society. Overall, the goal for
Mbiango is to gather both art and its viewer into one stunning, deeply spiritual achievement.

Kito Mbiango was born in Brussels in 1966. He is completely self-taught in his technique and utilizes multiple production methods including image transfer and mixed media assemblage all applied meticulously by hand.

José Antonio Hernández Diez. Recent Work
This exhibition presents new work in progress from José Antonio Hernández Diez and will evolve as it travels to new venues. After its presentation at KaBe Contemporary this exhibition will travel to Periférico Caracas among other venues in 2010.

This show features the Venezuelan artist’s first solo exhibition in Miami, his most recent work, an installation consisting of video and photography, reflecting the sentimental side of human beings. People who were touched by a personal tragedy, perhaps the loss of a loved one due to everyday crime, seek some sort of consolation or closure. His work explores time travel and the possibility to say one last goodbye or undo facts, such as death, thus contributing to a more humane and happy society.

Haynes & Rivera-Bond
Donna Haynes, Rosario Rivera-Bond
Artformz is pleased to present the first exhibition of the New Year featuring new works of gallery artists Donna Hayes and Rosario Rivera-Bond. The exhibit displays the unique way in which each of the two artists has chosen to develop their work using found materials. Both approach the technique of assemblage of found objects with thematic similarities yet each achieves a striking difference as is evident in the presentation of the final artworks.

Rivera-Bond places an installation in the galleries project room as well as works in the main space. Also in the main space, Haynes will be exhibiting 3 dimensional constructions and directing an audience participatory piece involving a new work designed around the theme of words as text, written or typed.

Both artists address the “feminine” as a means of personal expression in reference to common societal rolls, consumerism, and the body.
