Adventures in Miami: Wynwood Food Tour

Apart from the occasional Panther cold brew, my experience with Wynwood has always been at night. An evening gallery party or Second Saturday Art Walk has taken me up and down the colorful streets, but after an invite from Miami Culinary Tours I decided it was time to explore Wynwood in the light of day.

Our host, Grace, greeted us at Wynwood Walls giving us a brief background on Miami’s history, the transformation of Wynwood and a lesson on the many artists now attracted to the flourishing area. Once consisting of abandoned warehouses and parking lots, Wynwood is now home to over 70 galleries and museums as well as countless restaurants and bars. After taking in the works of artists from around the world including Shepard Fairey, Gabriel Gimenez, and Fafi, we began the tour.

The restaurants we visited had cuisines as diverse as the neighborhood art, ranging from American Bistro, Nuevo Latino, Puerto Rican and Peruvian. The tour ended with a local Florida classic, Key Lime Pie.

Yellowfin Tuna Tartare and a Shredded Short Rib Slider

Ropa Vieja Empanadas, Maduros, Tequenos & a brew from Wynwood Brewing

Key Lime Pie

Mofongo

Rain or shine, the Wynwood Culinary Tour is presented daily at 12:00 pm. For $69, a knowledgeable guide will take you around the neighborhood teaching you about history, artist information and an introduction to five new restaurants. The tour lasts for 2.5 hours, covering a distance of about a mile. Tickets are easy to purchase on their website, and they also offer tours in South Beach and Little Havana. To book your art and food tour click here, and make sure to arrive hungry!

Critical Mass Miami
Government Center, 6:30pm

6:30pm (ride starts at 7:15pm)

Government Center
Downtown Miami

The ride will be going through Little Havana, Grapeland Heights, Allapattah, Brownsville, Liberty City, Wynwood, Overtown, OMNI, Park West, and Downtown. Total distance is approximately 16 miles. It's strongly suggested that you print a copy of the map or save it on your phone in case you are tardy or get lost.

All eyes appear to be on Miami Critical Mass and it’s time for participants to prove the opposition wrong. Everyone riding is solely responsible for their actions and should lead by example. If you see someone riding or behaving irresponsibly, then let them know it’s not acceptable. If you’re partaking in the ride, then it’s your duty to positively influence others. Ride safely and be courteous to everyone in the community, if you can’t do this then quite simply you are not welcomed. There’s no room for hostile, drunk, moronic individuals. There are a lot of great people on these rides, enjoying their city by bicycle for 1-2 hours on the last Friday of every month, and it’s rather unfortunate that a few bad apples can ruin this special occurrence for everyone else. To frustrated motorists, borrow a bicycle and try joining the ride sometime with some friends. You never know, you just may experience one of the most fun, free, and healthy social gatherings South Florida has to offer.

Bicycle Rules & Safety Tips

  • Stay in the right lane, and do not ride across middle line on the road into opposite travel lane
  • Yield to emergency vehicles.
  • No Headphones! While riding a bicycle it is illegal to wear a headset, headphone or other listening device, other than a hearing aid or instrument for the improvement of defective human hearing.
  • Safety Lights: Front & rear lights are required by law in the State of Florida.
  • Kids under 16 years of age must wear helmets.
  • Do not ride on the sidewalk.
  • Passing: A passing cyclist is responsible for the safety of the cyclist that is being passed. When passing ring a bell and/or say "on your left".
  • Yield to pedestrians and buses.
  • No drinking of alcohol or illegal activity during ride.
  • Do not filter forward past stopped cars at a red light.
  • Skateboarders, inline skaters and recumbent bikes are welcomed, exercise caution.
  • Do not litter or vandalize any property.
  • Stopping: If you must stop to check your bike, phone, gear etc please move over to the sidewalk when it's clear. Do not stop abruptly in the middle of the street with the mass behind you. You will more than likely cause a cyclist to hit you and/or swerve and hit someone else.
  • Always perform an "ABC Quick" Bike Check to ensure that your bike is in safe working order.
It's here! Finally Friday!!!
Dolphins won last night, and tomorrow, Canes play FSU.
Light your prayer candles Miami.... LET'S GO CANES!

Beautiful weather, sunny skies and lots to do this weekend!
Enjoy it Miami, we deserve it!

Treat yourself to amazing ice cream this weekend at Azucar, Little Havana!

THE MOVIE: CHEF
A Chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.

After talented and dynamic chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) isn’t given the space he needs to shine at his L.A. restaurant due to the owner’s (Dustin Hoffman) rigid traditional ways, he launches on a social media-fueled tirade against his nemesis food critic (Oliver Platt), which lands him without any job prospects. With a new lease on life, Chef Casper moves to Miami with his son and his sous chef (John Leguizamo) to build a brand new food truck business. This smart take on food and chef culture contains poignant messages about the media-driven world we live in and the real meaning of success.

With real heart, Jon Favreau plays a man who must find common ground between his passion for cooking and his love for his son. His direction of an ensemble cast including Sofia Vergara, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Amy Sedaris, and perhaps, most notably, up-and-coming Emjay Anthony, is refreshingly honest and rings true.

THE MENU
Miami has been at the forefront of the explosion of Food Truck Culture with a multitude of delicious offerings, but for this special evening we're partnering up with one of our favorites- the always mouth-watering Los Chamos whose menu of traditional Venezuelan fare is always yummy.

As always we'll keep it casual, you'll pickup your food from the Los Chamos truck stationed right in front of the cinema and you can enjoy it in our recently renovated outdoor courtyard or take it inside with you to eat while you're watching the film.

Your meal will be a fulfilling tasting of traditional venezuelan fare. Each meal will be served withtequenos, a savory sourdough pastry with cheese filling and a side of spicy guava habanero sauce. You'll enjoy one Arepa and oneEmpanada and can choose from the meat-based or veggie options below:

O Cinema, 8pm

Holy sh*t. I can't believe this movie is 25 years old....which in turn makes me...just as old.

O Cinema & Popcorn Nights are proud to present: BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE – 25th Anniversary Screening & post-film Q&A with ALEX WINTER (a.k.a. Bill S. Preston Esq!)

Two years later, they returned to the big screen in 1991 with the hugely underrated BILL & TED’S BOGUS JOURNEY. It has been 25 years since the theatrical release of the first film and while Keanu and Alex tease us with hints of a possible BILL & TED 3 in the works, Popcorn Nights & O Cinema decided that the existence alone of Bill & Ted is cause for celebration.

The first 70 tickets reserved online get a FREE pack of original 1991 “BILL & TED’S MOST ATYPICAL MOVIE CARDS” Plus lots of other awesome giveaways from 80sTees.com, Inc. and Harshness Prints!

“As we have seen over the past decade with food, both in our homes and restaurants, people are more aware and concerned with knowing the source of what they consume and how it’s made. The farm-to-table movement is really a nod to old processes, a step back in time,” says Massolo. “With CRAFT, I hope to bridge a similar gap, one that grows the understanding of- and appreciation for- small batch spirits and beers being made with great care; many, following family recipes, helping revive their surrounding community or following historic and traditional guidelines.”
