The Kampong in Coconut Grove

The Kampong is an absolute jewel off the beaten path in Miami.
Located off of Douglas Road in South Coconut Grove, The Kampong is literally a hidden oasis nestled on the shores of Biscayne Bay. With no large signs or national marketing programs, behind the large red gate (that you've probably driven by many times) lies a beautiful tropical garden.

The Kampong property was purchased in 1916 by David Fairchild and his wife, Marian...daughter of Alexander Graham Bell (he invented the telephone...that later emerged into your smartphone?)

David Fairchild (yes, of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables) was an adventurous plant explorer who traveled the world in search of new plants to be introduced to the US. Fairchild  brought back over 30,000 exotic flora and fauna for research and to cultivate in his gardens. Fairchild lived at The Kampong until his passing.

Saved by the Sweeneys in 1963, Dr. Catherine Sweeney preserved the unique plant collection and home, and later gifted The Kampong property to the National Tropical Botanic Garden non-profit organization. The Kampong is meticulously maintained and gives you the feeling you are strolling through South Asia. The property is a walkable 3/4 mile, with a beautiful path towards Biscayne Bay. On your walk, if you find ripe fruit on the ground, it's yours to take! Picnics are also welcome.

The Kampong is only accessible via appointment during the week, and guided tours are available Wednesdays and Saturdays until the end of June.
Self-Guided Tours are available Mon-Fri 9:30am-4pm for $15, 12& under are free
Guided Tours are available September-June on Wednesdays and Saturdays for $20, reservations required.

33rd Annual King Mango Strut Parade
2pm, Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove

The 33rd annual King Mango Strut marches down the streets of Coconut Grove where South Florida’s wackiest citizens come out to entertain the masses with the biggest newsmakers of the year. Our country has had a rough year, but things look good in the future, so the parade is themed around the slogan “Life is just ebola cherries.”

Among the hilarious acts, expect to see “FanGate” – remembering the debate that blew us all away; “Invasion of the White House: Intruder Alert!;” “Taken by Tolls on the 836 and 112;” and “Charles Manson’s Wedding.

The King Mango Strut goes beyond watching — it’s engaging fun for the entire family. The event starts with the Little Miss Mango and Little King Mango pageant, where every kid wins, and rides the float to lead the parade. Following the Grand Marshal and Little Mangoes, the laughter will ensue as groups engage crowds along the route in an interactive review of the most entertaining happenings of 2014. Following the parade, Commodore Plaza will explode with four live bands for an after-party until 6:00 p.m., and plenty of photo opportunities with the Mangoheads.

This year’s Grand Marshall is Rick Scott, Governor of Florida, on his “In Your Face Victory Tour.” We will also have Guest Celebrity Ed Bell, of WLRN, in honor of his 44 years of broadcasting and promoting music in South Florida, as well as his promoting the King Mango Strut.

The parade begins with the dropping of the banana at 2:00 p.m., at Commodore Plaza and Main Highway, runs to Grand Avenue, makes a hard left, and heads back to Commodore. Early arrival is suggested to get the best viewing spots. Children who want to participate in the Little Miss Mango and Little King Mango pageant and ride the float should arrive at Commodore Plaza by 1 p.m. (no special outfits needed). The parade ends with an after party on Commodore Plaza, with local bands Iko-Iko, Roadkill, Mr. Nice Guy, and Memphis Kelly rocking until 6:00 p.m

Peacock Park, 3-7pm
For the fourth year, Grovetoberfest will anoint Coconut Grove with over 300 great beers from across the county and across the world. Grovetoberfest is hosted seaside at Peacock Park, right in the heart of Miami, making it the "most scenic beer festival in the world".

Grovetoberfest is the largest craft beer festival in Florida with over 300 beer styles and over 7,000 visitors. We are all about craft beer and a large variety of craft beer. This year countless breweries will be releasing new beers at Grovetoberfest for the very first time anywhere. And we'll have schedule tappings happening all day long.

We are bringing back favorites like the Kitchen Lab, where you can learn cooking with beer tips from award-winning chefs; Miami's Best Homebrew contest, where local brewmasters-to-be battle it out for the coveted title; Beer Tasting 101 hosted by FIU's Beer Academy, where you can learn the basics of beer tasting; and the Live Music Stage with great performances all day.

Let's not forget that this is still a BEER festival, and we'll have hundreds to sample. As Miami grows its craft beer community, we'll have even more beers to taste and enjoy. But the real stars of Grovetoberfest are you, the beer-drinking fans. Last year, over 7,000 of you descended on Peacock Park with great enthusiasm and responsibility. The crowd had a great representation of both men and women, and beer fans came from all over Florida and as far away as the U.K., Norway and Australia!

King Mango Strut Parade in Downtown Coconut Grove
Parade starts at 2pm

What is the King Mango Strut Parade!?

A funny thing happened on the way to the Orange Bowl Parade. Well, for one thing, they wanted a lot of money just to get in. Then there was a limit to how many units could be in the parade and a design committee to approve your design.

Bill and Glenn wanted to enter as the Merry Mango Marching Band, wearing conch shells on their heads, playing kazoos and banging on garbage cans. The committee rejected them!

“That’s okay – we don’t want to be in your snooty parade anyway,” Glenn said. “We should start our own parade,”
Bill said. “Who needs King Orange – we’ve got King Mango!,” Glenn said. And so, the King Mango Strut was born. The rest, is history.

Commodore Plaza will remain closed until 6PM for the
After-Strut-Party with Bands, Dancing & Merriment!!!

If you're off today like me, and perhaps the rest of Miami, come by Coconut Grove and check out their new Green Market on Thursday afternoons in the parking lot of the Grove Playhouse!

I drove by last week and there were a bunch of tents filled with vendors selling local fruits and veggies. I'm hoping this market is cheaper than the Saturday Glaser Farms non-local market! Stay tuned!

Canes Fans!! If you're at the Wake Forest game, make sure you check out Kolyr!!
After the game, be sure to head to the Grove for the Canes Crawl.
Both are raising money for the University of Miami!

UM Students launch line of vegan,
university-inspired footwear to raise money for their school.

KOLYR is a line of flexible, lightweight footwear launching this winter that is 100% vegan and cruelty free. The colors and design of the shoes are inspired by various universities in an effort to bring fans together and give students an outlet to support their favorite universities by showing off their school “kolyrs.”

The KOLYR team competed in and placed in the University of Miami’s School of Business Administration’s annual business plan competition and has been working to bring their dream to life ever since. Founders Alex Shapiro, Whitney Kimmel and Tes Michan plan to launch the inaugural line in Miami just in time for March Madness and will feature shoes in orange and green tones reminiscent of their own university colors.

KOLYR is currently hosting a Kickstarter campaign to secure the seed funding necessary to launch the line this winter. After taking the University of Miami’s entrepreneurship class, the founders wanted to put their class theories into action. Shapiro explains, “Taking classes at the Business School made me realize that it is possible to make these dreams a reality. After 13 months of sweat and tears, we have a product prototype that is ultra lightweight and flexible, amazing offshore production partners, and an awesome product that is ready to hit the shelves.”
KOLYR will be sold at sporting events and community gatherings via their Brand Ambassadors program to build on the social experience of being a fan. KOLYR’s Brand Ambassadors will walk around these events passing out swag, creating buzz and engaging fans in cheers and activities to inspire their passion (and getting them in their first pair of KOLYR’s of course).

For more information, or to purchase your first pair of KOLYR's, please visit www.kolyr.com

AFTER THE GAME......be sure to stop by the Grove and support the Canes Crawl.
All funds raised will be donated to the UM Sylvester Cancer Center
